Our clients suffered flood damage last winter due to a poorly maintaned beck nearby that caused damage to 3 properties on their road.  As a result of this, the clients decided to carry out a full renovation and improve the kitchen and garden room.  The property has a mixture of insulation throughout as it has been altered over the years.  However, we proposed our Variotherm overlay UFH system to both maximise potential output while also maximising the efficiency.  

The Variotherm is capable of very high outputs per m² and so the counter to that is lower flow temperatures for a given output than other systems.  Furthermore, the client suggested they were going to install a timber floor at the finish which would have compromised the potential output from our system and so we advised exploring a wood effect tile and this is what they settled on.  The effect is dramatic and works beautifully, as we can acheive the output we need without the limit that timber would have put upon us.

The heat pump is the amazing Panasonic Aquarea, one of the most efficient and flexible around.  Again the whole property (3 manifolds!) is being served by the formidible modulatiing circulation pump within the Aquarea unit outside the property.  COPs so far have been excellent but we had not enabled the Smart Cloud at the time of writing.

This project was for an Air Source Heat Pump to serve a 3 storey house with UFH on the ground and first floors, and radiators on the top floor.

In order to make the system as efficient as we could, we designed the ground floor UFH package with the pipes at 100mm centres with the first floor at 150mm centres.  We did this as the staircase is situated in the middle of the house and so the some of the core energy generated downstairs, goes all the way up the middle of the house and so we biased the system towards the ground floor living spaces.  The result has been very successful and the homeowner has stated that the radiators are hardly having to do any work on the top floor but the ground and first floors are keeping a nice balance.  Consequently we are observing a COP of well over 500% since we added the Planet Devices remote monitoring software.  All three floors are again being served completely by the single OEM circulation pump within the Clivet unit outside.

“An ode to AquaTherma by Mike Brummitt on two new-builds.

Aqua first came to my attention from Sam Sam the friendly tattooed floor screed man from East Midlands Flowscreed (known as Sam for the rest of this text) having used Sam on a couple of jobs before.

He said “Mike, the bands back together!”, from then on my project never looked back!!

I had a couple of site meetings with Tom and Ang and we were up and running. 

Sam obviously completed the UFH pipe installation and screeding in his usual epic manner and was shortly followed by James and now Reuben who installed the ASHP and all associated equipment.

The soldiers behind the scenes, Tom, Ang, and Laura, dealt with the thankless paperwork tasks seamlessly and obviously redeemed my BUS vouchers in a timely fashion. 

As with all big building projects, this was a huge financial worry but my mind was soon put at rest.  My family now benefit from a beautifully cosy home and we can’t thank the band enough for their hard work.

These clients have an old solid stone property with some solid brick extensions.  The house was heated by an LPG gas powered Rayburn which was proving inefficient and inconvenient from a control point of view.  The compact cylinder was in a cupboard above the Rayburn.  The radiators were fed on a one pipe system which is supposedly not possible to run with a heat pump system.

They had the Rayburn removed to free up space in the kitchen and we stripped out the old cylinder to be replaced by a plate loaded unvented cylinder in the rather tight space.

The Clivet heat pump could only be sited on the front elevation of the property and the primary pipes were taken through the 600mm rubble filled stone wall and then up to the new cylinder.

The system has been running for a few months now achieving an average COP so far in excess of 5:1.  The clients are very happy with the steady temperature in the property which they like to maintain at around 18°C although we have designed it to run at a higher temperature if desired.

“Having no mains gas in our village, when it came to replacing our old central heating boiler we wanted an alternative to oil or LPG. Wanting to take advantage of the government grant we looked at an ASHP. The general consensus seemed to be that you needed underfloor heating or big radiators at the very least. And for an old house like ours it wasn’t the best choice. However Aquatherma came and took a thorough look at our existing set up and were confident they could build us a system that worked, using our existing one pipe radiators. We have had the ASHP heating our hot water since July and now have more hot water at a higher pressure than we have ever had.  We switched on the heating in October and so far if has exceeded our expectations. Tom, James and Angelo were easy to work with from start to finish, very responsive throughout, and continue to be so now the system is up and running. Quickly responding to our questions, even on a Sunday evening when we had a technical glitch.
